That is a good question and many times it isn’t even a subject that is covered in the specifications for a new facility or factory.
The reality is that the spec writers are not familiar with the benefits that Vibration Analysis can offer the owner and many times the entire concept of commissioning is an after thought… or negotiated away when the bids come in high.
Who gets to decide when the contractor has finished the job? Who gets to decide when the contractor gets paid the last residual? What if the work isn’t done … or done right?
Many times the people approving the final payment are not doing anything wrong, they just don’t know how to inspect a job and how to confirm the job has been done right.
To the untrained eye, they see a pump and motor wired, painted and labeled in the right spot per the drawings. How do they know if it performs correctly or if it will keep operating for more than a day, a week, a few months or barely a year.
Those of us who have had the opportunity to maintain the equipment for long periods of time … after the contractor walks away know, that it is like pulling teeth to get a contractor to correct any work after he has the final payment. He is off to new opportunities and he figures any additional cash flow on a completed site is a loss to him.
How do you know its right? Well checking the rotation and seeing if it runs is a beginning, but Vibration analysis is better and can be your eyes in many ways.
Is it mounted right, is there a soft foot, is it aligned correctly, are there coupling issues, are the bearings greased adequately, are the belts too lose or too tight, is it out of balance or in a stall condition … all of these situations can be detected with Vibration Analysis.
In addition, many owners want a “Foot Print” at start up – Commissioning time to verify the status of all rotating equipment in a new facility so that it can be used as yard stick year after year to make sure that the maintenance being preformed on this equipment is protecting the capital investment the owner has made in this facility.
Whether a factory, a data center, an office building, hospital or convention center … Vibration Analysis at Commissioning time is a smart investment in the owner’s capital outlay.
